In 1819, Missouri’s request for statehood ignited a national fight over slavery, representation, and political power. This episode examines the Tallmadge Amendment, the Panic of 1819, Maine’s admission, and the Missouri Compromise of 1820. We explore Northern and Southern arguments, the experiences excluded from the debate, and why a geographic line failed to settle the country’s growing division over slavery.

In Episode 2 of America in Two Voices, we examine how cotton, territorial expansion, and slavery reshaped the United States after the founding era.
The invention of the cotton gin helped transform cotton into the nation’s most valuable export, while increasing the demand for enslaved labor across the Deep South. Northern merchants, banks, insurers, manufacturers, and consumers also benefited from the expanding cotton economy.
We follow the gradual abolition of slavery in many Northern states, the Northwest Ordinance, the international slave-trade ban of 1808, the forced migration known as the Second Middle Passage, and the nation’s expansion onto Native lands.
This episode explores the different experiences of North and South without presenting either region as innocent. The sections developed along different paths, but their economies and political decisions remained deeply connected.

In the summer of 1787, delegates met in Philadelphia to create a stronger national government, but their debates over representation, commerce, and executive power were shadowed by slavery. Through secrecy and compromise—the Great Compromise, the Three-Fifths Clause, limits on banning the international slave trade, and the Fugitive Slave Clause—the Constitution balanced competing regional interests while leaving the most painful questions unresolved.The episode shows how those bargains shaped political power, protected slavery in federal law, and carried conflicts into the nation’s future, setting the stage for decades of sectional struggle that eventually led to the Civil War.
